Kitchen Tools: Apple Corer & Wedger on The Collegiate Gourmet

Apple Corers, Wedgers and Corer/Wedger Combos

Since it's apple season and I'll be posting some apple recipes in the next few weeks, I thought I'd start out with some basic tools for working with apples.

You might be used to grabbing an apple and simply eating it on your way out the door, but if you're looking to expand your horizons with new recipes then you've got to have the right tools.

Peeling apples without the proper tools is a pain in the...I'm not going to say that word on a food blog--it's not very sanitary.  Anyway, peeling and coring apples should be quick and painless, if you have the right tools.

1.  Get a good peeler, corer and a combo corer/wedger and you're on your way to gourmet apple burgers and homemade apple pie in no time.
2.
It should take you less than a minute to peel an apple with a good peeler.  After practicing, it should take you 30 seconds.
3.  See the peeler in the picture?  That's the kind you should be using.
4.  When peeling an apple pull it towards you.  Once you've peeled it use the corer to remove the core.

5.  If you aren't going to be peeling your apple and you just want some nice apple slices to go with your peanut butter, use a combo corer/wedger.  It will take you 5 seconds to make perfect slices.

Now peeling all of those fresh apples won't feel so daunting and you won't be tempted to use canned apple filling for that pie.

Sometimes it's hard to figure out which tools work and which tools are a complete waste of time.  There are so many kitchen gadgets out there, a trip to Bed Bath and Beyond might leave your head spinning and those late night infomercials scream "You can't live without it!"

Part of learning how to cook means not only determining which tools will work, but which tools will work for you.  Understandably, even GREAT kitchen tools might not have a place in your kitchen (or dorm room).  You must determine which ones you will use on a regular basis and which ones are a waste of your time.

One thing is for certain, good tools make cooking and baking faster, easier and more fun.

A Good Peeler
written by Sally J., October 30, 2008
OMG -it sounds silly but my mom had this veg peeler when I was growing up that became so dull but she refused to part with it. It wasn't until I went to college and bought my own that I realized how important it was to have good, working tools int he kitchen.
